Blade construction (kengyo) : Shinogi-zuruki, Iori-mune. Kasane is a bit shallow, less in width on Shinogi-ji leading to an extended middle kissaki. (click HERE for high resolution of the blade photograph)
Forging pattern (kitae hada) : Kitae hada is well-kneaded Itame-hada mixing in with large Mokume pattern. There works with outstanding thick Nie darkish lines along forging marks so called Chikei activity that boils out from steel. There reflects with speckled whitish Utsuri reflection that comes from hard metal granules over the hiraji-surface.
Tempering pattern (hamon) : Hamon is fine ko-nie base, generally two small round head pointed gunomes and tall sharpened outline that groups together and repeats, so called Sanbonsugi. Some of tall gunome gives out brilliant/bright nie flame that works speckled Utsuri. The interior of temper is filled in with whitish smoke NIOI and there is frequent Sunagashi hard metal nie brushing lines. The entire Ji-Ha is filled in with rich and clear/vivid scene that comes from skilled technique for the best cutting performance.
Temper of tip (boshi) : Boshi is irregular pattern with medium circle turn back.
Tang (Nakago) : Nakago is suriage(cut down), by about 105mm. Kirii horizontal heel shape. Two Mekugi-ana peg holes. Original Takanoha (V-shape) file marks. The signature in hakiomote is located on bottom large two character [KANEMOTO].
The subject heroically brave katana was supposed originally Two shaku seven a bit less sun (about 82cm) in length possibly by a special demand during battle period in the early 16 th century. KANEMOTO was a representative smiths in Mino province, especially second generation had an additional famed name MAGOROKU, as one of the most skilled smith among all generations of KANEMOTO lineage. The mature forging and unique temper pattern generated masterly best cutting performance raised in fame among commanders. The signature of MAGOROKU KANEMOTO is understood that it was large and square chiselled, broad-minded, full of dignity. This Katana shows indeed a typical workmanship of Second Gen. KANEMOTO.
