Blade construction : Unokubi-zukuri, Iori-mune, High in Shinogi-suji, thick in Kasane at the tip then volume of lower back ridge Mune is shaved off.(click HERE for higher resolution image)
Forging(Hada) : Hada is very fine Ko-itame that is deeply covered with martensite crystals of Ji-Nie.
Temper(Hamon) : Hamon is based on a bit on stronger side coarse Nie-based crystals, some splits over to Hiraji to generate Hitatsura quenching scene. Undulating Notare with large roundish elements of Gunome, Hotsure and Ni-ju-ha indication. The interior of temper is filled with deep Nioi crystals where short lines of Nie Sunagashi or thicker long lines of Kinsen appears along boundary line.
Temper of tip(Boshi) : Boshi forms powerful undulating with Niju-ha of double boundary lines elements with intense Hakikake indication then turns back deeply that connects to Muneyaki hardening pattern of back ridge.
Tang(Nakago) : UBU original. Katte-sagari shallow slanting left filemark. Kurijiri double bevelled heel. One peg hole. The cursive style a monk signature is located along the Shinogi-suji ridge, engraved as Akama Nyudo NAONOBU 赤間入道直信.

The latter half of Edo preiod, city of Yonezawa in Dewa province (now south of Yamagata pref.), the most famed brother smiths "Kato Tsunatoshi" 加藤綱俊 and "Tsunahide" 綱英 who belonged to the great master "Suishinshi Masahide" 水心子正秀 school appeared and also their pupil of "Akama TSUNANOBU" 赤間綱信 had been active vigorously for the Yonezawa retainers.
The subject healthy tanto was made by Akama NAONOBU 赤間直信 who was a son of Akama TSUNANOBU 赤間綱信, real name is Akama Okichi 赤間翁吉. It is understood that he had studied under AKAMA 赤間 studio to train himself for Bizen-tradition and Toran-ha billows and then learned the other skills and sence of traditional art from the current famed artisan Gassan SADAYOSHI 月山貞吉. His posthumous wroks with the date of year ranges from Ansei to Meiji 3 (1854 - 70).
The subject tanto which is very much influenced by the ancient Yamato tradition was made for a good luck charm to ward off devils for the owner and comes with an original
Black lacquered Aikuchi-style Tanto Koshirae.
Original copper ground, silver foiled Habaki collar. (No Shirasaya mounting included)
