Mainstream faction in Bizen province during Kamakura period were Ichimonji and Osafune schools. Since the advent of Ichimonji sword maker NORIMUNE 則宗, the nature of Japanese sword has changed drastically. Emperor Go-Toba nominated him as one of the official sword smiths of Emperor. Emperor Go-Toba conferred smith NORIMUNE 則宗 the title of "Tenka Ichi 天下一" to take the top of the sword smiths. He or his lineages of Ichimonji-schools sometimes added the title of "ICHIMONJI 一" in addition of smith name or sometimes chiselled only the title of "ICHIMONJI 一" or occasionally add both.
Fukuoka ICHIMONJI 福岡一文字 school were active early - middle of Kamakura (1200-1250) in Fukuoka town, Bizen province then transmitted to Yoshioka ICHIMONJI 吉岡一文字 middle - end of Kamakura (1250-1330), where was located at Yoshioka-sho town in the opposite shore of Yoshii-river.
The subject Tachi, although it was substantially shortened about by 4 sun (12cm), because of the grooves tracks indicating that the original cutting edge used to be on about 80.5cm, still stands firmly on base with it's waist pointed curvature "Koshi-Sori". Steel grain forging mark "Kitae-hada" is vividly fine Ko-Mokume (burl grain) in general and mixing in with flowing Itame-hada (wooden grain) pattern. The steel of Hiraji surface is covered in speckled ji-nie glitter which forms clove like reflecting irregular whitish Utsuri effect vividly over the surface.
Hamon forms generally small pattern of Clove (Choji) outline mixing with Gunome and Togari sharpen head outline and adds the partial flamboyant large clusters clove outlines. In the interior of temper, there works with whitish Nioi mist-like crystalline area deeply and is active with frequent clove feet, YOU dots and Sunagashi thick lines of Nie. The heads of clove and gunome radiate quenching effect frequently toward the Hiraji surface to generate "Choji-Utsuri" that gives off diffused reflection with a mottled effect like clove outline.Temper of tip forms "Ichimonji-boshi" - irregular outline with shallow return.
The entire shape of this Tachi forms rather slender with upper Monouchi area that stands upright leading to a middle point, those are major elements for earlier stage of Yoshioka ICHIMONJI 吉岡一文字, middle of Kamakura period.
