Blade construction (kengyo) : Hira-zukuri, Iori-mune Tanto. Mihaba is wide, almost no curvature and long dagger of which upper Fukura area in full. (click HERE for high resolution of the blade photograph)
Forging pattern (kitae hada) : Kitae hada is minute Ko-Itame hada with mixture of Ko-Mokume. The entire forging steel is covered with fine ji-nie (hard metal granules over the surface) and shows bluish, bright and shining steel impression.
Tempering pattern (hamon) : Hamon is fine ko-nie base starting with short straight temper so called Osaka-Yakidashi, wide Clove outline of which foot radiates frequently to the cutting edge. The interior of temper is deep in crystalized NIOI mist. The entire temper is in uniform manner and softly bright.
Temper of tip (boshi) : Boshi becomes straight and medium circle in a good manner turns back.
Tang (Nakago) : Nakago is original signed Oumi-no-kami TADATSUNA.O-sujikai slanting left greatly filemarks. Uneven U-shaped (Kurijiri) heel shape. Two Mekugi-ana peg holes.
The 2nd generation smith Awataguchi Oumi-no-kami TADATSUNA 粟田口近江守忠綱, his real name is Asai Mandayu 浅井万太夫 is the first son of 1st generation Oumi-no-kami TADATSUNA. His initial smith name was TADAKUNI 忠國 and then succeeded TADATSUNA 忠綱 as the 2nd generation. On after 2nd year of Genroku (1689) he named himself as [IKKANSHI]. His major workmanship is Ashinaga Choji (long foot clove), Gunome (zigzag), Toran (waves) and Suguha (straight) temper with Osaka style precise Ko-Itame forging. Also he is renowned for his elaborate carvings such as KURIKARA dragon, SANKO sword, Carp leaps straight to the top.
One of his long Katana signed [Awataguchi Ikkanshi TADATSUNA Hori-Dousaku Auspicious day in the 8 month, the 6th year of Houei] (1709) is awarded an important cultural property. He is one of the three great sword smiths in Osaka [SUKEHIRO, INOUE SHINKAI and TADATSUNA].
It is guessed that this tanto was special made on demand of wealthy merchant,
Daimyo or Hatamoto, high-ranking official Samurai against thrive of Osaka in 17th century. In view of precisely forged fine steel, it covers with uniform thick and sparkling Ji-nie glitter so called Osaka Shinto style steel. Tempering pattern "Ashi-Naga-Choji" is one of his pride, where long Kinsen (darkish thick Nie lines) activities sinks and floats to surface throughout from base to tip. The blade is solid on hand and impressively healthy, in an excellent condition.
